Rock star Jon Bon Jovi and his wife, Dorothea, bought the penthouse unit in The New Museum Building at 583 Broadway in Manhattan for $24 million from BKM Associates on June 1, 2007.
Mr. Bon Jovi, 46, is one of the most recognizable musicians of the past two decades, selling more than 120 million albums worldwide as the front man of the New Jersey-based rock band Bon Jovi. The band enjoyed almost unparalleled success during the mid-late 1980s, topping their rock band contemporaries with a combined eight Top 10 hits and four No.1 singles on the 1986 album Slippery When Wet and its 1988 follow-up New Jersey. The former sold 13.9 million copies domestically, was the top-selling album of 1987 and spawned the karaoke mainstays "You Give Love A Bad Name" and "Livin' On A Prayer," both No. 1 hits.
New Jersey continued the trend with two chart-topping singles and still boasts the honor of the only rock album to spawn five Top 10 singles. Although Bon Jovi's success dissipated in the 1990s, Jon Bon Jovi's 1990 solo single "Blaze of Glory" was a No. 1 hit and earned an Academy Award nomination for best original song from the movie Young Guns II.
Bon Jovi remerged as a commercial success in 2000 with the release of the hit single "It's My Life." The group's 2005 album Have A Nice Day also enjoyed impressive sales worldwide, and the 2007 album Lost Highway debuted at No. 1, giving the group it's first chart-topping album since the peak of its success in 1988. The album also spawned the single "Who Says You Can't Go Home," which garnered the group its only career Grammy Award, which they won for Best Country Collaboration.
Mr. Bon Jovi has also forayed successfully into the film industry, appearing in feature films such as Moonlight and Valentino, U-571 and Pay It Forward.
He ventured into the sports world in 2004, when he became the founder and primary owner of the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League. He was a quickly recognizable marketing face for the fledgling league, appearing in a number of commercial spots with former NFL quarterback and fellow AFL team owner John Elway.
The 12-story The New Museum Building was built in 1915 in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood, and was formerly known as the Astor Building until 1994. The New Museum of Contemporary Art was housed in the building from 1983-94, until the building underwent a condominium conversion and a name change to The New Museum Building. The museum moved from the building in 2003 to its new home at 235 Bowery.
